Specific Job Description

RMSL is a growth company with an outstanding job opportunity for a chemist. This position will report to the Testing Group Lead. In this role, the ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • Performs research, design, development, analysis, test and evaluation of complex security systems.

  • Determines potential of physics approaches for further development, defines opportunities to interface various technologies/systems, and assesses usefulness of technologies in the homeland security environment with little, to no supervision.

  • Writes experiment/test plans and procedures, conducts test, collects test data, and prepares technical reports.

  • Prepares and gives presentations at conferences and other meetings.

 

Required Skills

  • Must be able to perform a variety of complex laboratory analytical procedures.

  • Has experience in automated data collection, analysis, and presentation.

  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and has working knowledge of commercial software programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Physical requirements:

    • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time; must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.; must have the ability to see near and far and work with a computer monitor on a daily basis

    • Required to bend, sit, stand and lift to perform job effectively

Desired Skills

  • Physics - including but not limited to:

    • Familiarity with X-ray and photon-matter interactions

    • Experience with X-ray measurements including digital radiography, computed tomography, diffraction, incoherent scatter, fluorescence, and photon counting

    • Ability to develop and fabricate prototype instruments for physical characterization

  • Chemistry – experience including but not limited to:

    • Analytical - experience with analytical chromatography techniques

    • Instrumental - experience with designing/modifying/building new scientific instrumentation, prototypes, and National Instruments LabVIEW, etc.

    • Computational – familiar with Gaussian, SIMION, etc.

    • Organic - experience with the synthesis/formulation of explosives and/or other hazardous contraband materials.

    • Must possess a demonstrated ability to safely and quantitatively handle, mix and synthesize chemicals.

    • Experience in elemental composition analysis, including combustion/pyrolysis, and X-ray Fluorescence

  • Bulk and Trace Contraband Detection - including but not limited to experience with:

    • Advanced technology (AT) i.e., multiple angle projection radiography

    • Single and dual energy computed tomography

    • Photon counting radiography and tomography

    • Rotating and fixed gantry EDS

    • Bottled liquid screening (multiple technologies)

    • Energy-dispersive and angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction

    • X-ray scatter

    • Nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance

    • Ion mobility spectrometry

    • Mass spectrometry

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a science field (i.e., physics, chemistry) from an accredited college or university. 

  • Shall have at least 6 years of experience in experimental or applied science (physics, chemistry, or related) that demonstrates a professional knowledge of physics/chemistry, and/or development of physics or chemistry/trace-based systems. Professional knowledge is defined as the comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of advanced technology development;

  • OR a master’s degree in a science field (i.e., physics, chemistry) from an accredited college or university.

  • Good written and oral communications skills.

  • US Citizenship

  • Ability to obtain security clearance
